Signs Your Car Needs an Alignment
Incorrect wheel alignment can pose significant safety risks and cost drivers more money over time. Here are some of the obvious signs that it’s time to schedule a maintenance appointment with the service department at Bill Seidle's Nissan.
Steering Wheel Position
When you travel down a flat road, the steering wheel should be centered. If the wheel is off-center by more than a miniscule amount, an alignment is in order. The vehicle emblem should sit upright in the center of the wheel and, after an alignment, overall drivability will improve.
Pulling
If the vehicle pulls to either side while traveling on a flat straightaway, it’s time to visit a dealership service department for an alignment. Ideally, the vehicle should drive in a straight line with very little driver input. If a used vehicle pulls to either side, it’s time for an alignment.
Tire Wear
Abnormal tire wear is a little more difficult to notice, but it’s a sure sign that there’s an issue with the car’s alignment. Wear on the inside or outside edges of the tire might direct a technician to look at the camber adjustment. Professional technicians will most likely notice tire wear while performing a rotation or inspection. Proper alignment will improve the vehicle’s overall drivability and increase the lifespan of its tires.
Handling
A loose steering wheel is a sure sign that your used car needs a wheel alignment. Ideally, the wheel should be firm, but easily maneuverable with driver input. If the vehicle feels as though it’s wandering across the road or is uneasy while cornering, have the alignment modified.
The feel of the steering
In a car with proper alignment, the steering wheel will return to center on its own after making a turn. A steering wheel that remains in off-center position is a major sign that it’s time for an alignment.
