Oil plays three main roles within the engine block: lubrication, cooling, and protection. By serving as a lubricant, oil prevents the many moving metal pieces of the engine from damaging one another. An engine tends to get very hot, especially at high speed. As oil circulates through the engine, it carries away some of the heat with it. Lastly, oil protects the cooler parts of the engine by preventing carbon deposits from building up over time.
