Alignment FAQ
Should I get my tires aligned?
Tire alignment is the adjustment of the angle of the wheels to make sure that they are perpendicular to the ground as well as parallel with one another. Tire alignments make your tires last longer, and they also make sure your vehicle travels in a straight course while you drive on a level straight road.
Some of the terms your service
Here are some common signs that it might be time to have your tires aligned:
- Uneven or rapid tire wear
- Pulling in any one direction or "wandering" while driving on a straight level road
- Steering wheel spokes canted to either side while driving on a straight level road
Some of the terms your service technician may use while talking about your alignment can be rather technical. Here's a list of some of the common alignment terms and easily understandable definitions.
Alignment Terms
Camber
Measure of how many degrees a tire is from being perpendicular to the road; negative camber means top of tire leans toward wheel well; positive camber means top of tire leans away from wheel well
Caster
Angle of tire's steering pivot point in relation to front and back of vehicle; negative caster means caster line points toward back of vehicle; positive caster means caster line points toward front of vehicle
Toe
Angle of tires pointing inward or outward from vehicle
Proper wheel alignments always begin and end with a test drive. The vehicle's front end as well as the steering linkage should be checked for wear before performing an alignment. The tires should always have even wear patterns and be in good condition. A good wheel alignment technician will be able to determine whether the vehicle is pulling in one direction or another due to misalignment, unequal air pressure, brakes, or power steering.
